Trying to keep a consistent training routine while vacationing and/or traveling every weekend doesn’t have to be complicated.



On of my go to training routines for the upper body is the simple Push/Pull Dips and Chin-ups training.

No matter where you are, you can find a way to put something together to do dips ( here I scooted together the treadmills to create a dip station) and you can do chin-ups on almost anything.

For this training session I started off with Wenning Warmups, 3 sets of 25 reps of banded Tricep push downs, incline DB Press and standing mid back Rows.

Then I did 6 sets of 322322 weighted dips ( using a band as a dip belt ) and 233233 weighted chins

I followed this up with a 5x5x5
5 sets of 5 reps of dips and chins trying to get done in 5 min.

I finished with 3 sets of 30 sec bar hangs.

1. Don’t make excuses or try to find time to train … make the time and get it done

2. Don’t make excuses about lack of training equipment or that you don’t know what to do… pick a couple things, be creative with what you have and put in the work

3. Do good warmups and full range of motion movements while keeping proper time under tension ( tempo ) and you’ll be amazed at your strength and body transformation gainz !

Deadlifts tonight. Haven’t deadlifted “heavy” in a while as I have been experimenting with more of a sumo setup.

My hip/hamstring flexibility sucks so I’ve been working on that. Also still squatting with the SSB. All to focus on weak points. #wenningwarmups had me huffing and sweating like a pig (banded hamstring curls, reverse hypers, glute bridges w/ 50# dumbbell and standing ab crunches with band)

595 from 2" below the knee. Got the confidence that i can lock out a 600# deadlift.

Now just gotta get it going from the ground up.

DE upper day today. 135 w/ doubled over red bands (should be about 90# together at the top).

Definitely did not feel like 225. Double-checked one of the bands with a kettle bell and it was about 45# 🤷‍♂️. Also got an overhead view to check form. Still working on #barpath. My better half is still on gym restrictions ☹️

Motivation is more and more goals change first it was to get healthy and drop weight...and I did

from 360lbs i went 265...then i wanted to get strong and I started to compete with @torquebarbell behind me i am doing my best to get stronger now we are in lockdown i am fortunate enough to kmow amazing ppl who opened up to me and allow me to still train and now the goals are weather its the platform for the @cplpower or at the gym the goals are 800lbs deadlift 400lbs bench and 600lbs squat and i will keep training sticking to my diet and will not quit and i will do it on my terms... #irontherapy #wenningwarmups #torquebarbell

A couple screen shots from my last 2 training sessions.

I try to keep everything in an hour long period roughly. This keeps the volume high, and helps increase GPP. With the heart rate data here is pretty imposing to be peaking my heart rate so high with just weight training and keeping the rest periods lower.

195 would be my max heart rate (220-age) and I was able to get that high Saturday evening. This was a heavy squat day, my legs are still beat up from speed work, and I just had to push through. Glad I did, I think that helps get the pain gone when you can get your body moving under a load again. There only downside is I've been using Hatfield Squats for my heavy movement since I can get a little more stimulus and have an extra layer of safety when I'm not at my best.

The second screen is my heavy upper body day. Bench has been feeling faster, and I can tell the focus on upper back and triceps is having good carry over to my bench. Just need to keep it up.

Only set I captured on video today. Supposed to be low box speed squats but they weren’t very fast (they felt even slower than they look in this video).

~291 at the bottom and 307 at the top. I did #wenningwarmups before squatting and they kicked my butt. Just gotta keep putting in the work, it’s still early in the journey.

Take bands off and hit 140kg for 3x3 with pause.
Then 120kg with bands for 3x6.

But adding a deficit to the deads for more hip power. Easy peasy 5x10at 55% final set max reps leaving what was supposed to be 1-2 Left in The tank. But clearly after 15 Kate decided it was enough. Predicting a big pull and squat after this next block is finished running it’s course.

Not always for show muscles. They play a much bigger part in a strong bench then most people think. I still have a problem keeping my ass on the bench. But I don’t compete. So is it really a big deal?

12 weeks out. I hate bench. I’m starting light for this training cycle.

Focusing more on reps vs weight. Not looking for a huge bench. A small PR will suffice. Doing the #wenningwarmups is really making it tough to lift heavy, but it’s also helping me stay injury free.

Sticking with the theme of doing different variations to variety to this GPP block.

I’m doing a floor press with a bridge instead of bench. Why? 1) because I want to 2) because I find it cause more activation in the pec and I can have a deeper range of motion. The bridge aids in core stability and stiffness. This is also a good variation if you do not have a bench available. Also did some #wenningwarmups today.

Should you do speed work?

This is a big topic in the powerlifting community and not quite sure why.



Force = Mass x Acceleration

You can't maximize force, if you don't know how to accelerate. Very simple..

Also, this is a great way to get some volume in without injury or fatigue

Typically my speed work is faster than this (light weight w/bands or chains), but this month i did straight weight.

I would love to get some expert insight whether or not this looks quick enough @realmattwenning ..

100lb dip on the rings. Anyone that's used these knows how unstable they are.


This one took some mental fortitude as I wasn't feeling very with it during my warm-up. Did sprints last night for the first time in awhile which depleted glycogen stores- not good when you're trying to limit carbs.

But I love reaching a goal under suboptimal conditions.

Time to work on 200lbs on the regular dip bars- I'll accomplish it within 6 weeks.

Starting to get older and I’ve had too many dumb injuries over the years. A year ago I Started to incorporate high volume warm ups, varying depending if its upper body or lower body session. Great way to get in some cardio and get the muscles primed for the session. Today was 3x40-60 @ 40lbs dumbbell floor press, 3 sets of pull ups AMRAP minus 1-2 and then core no rest between sets. #fuckinjuries #wenningwarmups #strongman

I started back on the fitness trail again yesterday... Pun intended!

It's been a hectic journey since COVID-19 shut the world down and is attempting to shut down America again.
Everyone that is rushing back to their "normal routine" and thinking they can lift just as much or often should ask yourself; how long did it take me to get to where I was? Probably a lot longer that you're planning on getting back there. Yes, you can return fast but should you? Usually your body is deconditioned and joints not use to the stress anymore. Get back into it slowly and listen to you body.

I'm doing one day weights and only doing #wenningwarmups and maybe 1-3 heavier sets. One day active recovery/hike,jog and going to rest on the days I need to.

Wenning warmups! It is not secret I have a tremendous amount of respect for @realmattwenning.

I started doing his Wenning warmup with all my clients and myself with great results. Of course I am always trying to expand, learn, and experiment for greater results. Today we did a little modification. reverse hypers and bridge walk outs for 30 secs and 30 reps of belt squats all for three rotations through. They where pretty ass kicking for sure. This video is from my first group of the day. Have to thank @drjmike for the bridge walkout idea. He comes up with incredible content on his IG.

Worked up to a single at 425. Thought maybe had 455...but got in my own head and missed. Dropped down to a 10 spot at 315 to finish deads. Prob not incredibly astonishing numbers...but felt good at 180lbs and 49 years old. Followed with:

My technique stayed the same with or without the box, which is key for raw powerlifters who do them.

Don’t know what the wenning warm-up is?
Choose 3 exercises:
2 for weakpoints, 1 for priming the actual main exercise.
Each exercise for 25 reps, done in a circuit for 3-4 rounds.
Try to do it in 12-15 min. ( they are over pretty fast, believe me)

I rushed it a bit though and came too far forward, recovered the lift but not without tweaking my back a bit. Sitting in the chair getting a little stim therapy before seeing my boy @drmikemopal , can't wait for him to work some magic and get me straightened out.

The standing calf raise shown here has two components to pay attention to: as I lower myself down I’m allowing the stretch to occur in the calf’s, emphasized by going past “neutral” and holding that pose for just a second. As I transition into the “up” part of the movement, I allow my knees to come into a soft bend, as opposed to exploding up from a fully eccentric position. This allows a bit more of a “spring-like” burst to occur (stretch-shortening cycle) to make the concentric portion not only more explosive, but more mechanically efficient as well. Hold at the top for a second as well to really get those calves burning 🔥

Max effort upper. Straight bar bench plus chains. Chain weight is 72lbs at the top.

Bar+72lbs chain, 135x5,205x5, 225x5,255x5 then 275x4.5 which was about 347lbs at the top. Hit my sticking point and couldnt push through. Legs and glutes were still sore af from Monday so instead of squatting heavy I decided to try and pull a small PR.

Got 525 and felt pretty smooth besides the lock out. Then I squatted 315 for 8 reps without my squat shoes or my belt. Good day overall considered how toasted my legs felt going in. •

Woke up weighing 204 on the dot, last week I was 206.2.

Weightloss has been pretty steady past couple of weeks, been a week of fasted cardio and it's really helping. I've also been incorporating @realmattwenning Wenning warmups 4x25 of 3 exercises for warmups. Reverse band squat today was intense. 55lbs of weight taken off at the bottom of the squat and about 30 or less at the top.

475 was an ugly grinder but 495 felt smooth!... too bad the video got cut because I have no storage😭😂 whatever... after that I did some deficit deads, 315x4, 365x4, 385x4 and then amrap at 405 and got a smooth 7...great day overall💪

Great lift today, everything felt smooth and pain free which is always the best feeling.

These are my top sets for each of my four main movements of the day, need to dial in on form/bar placement on my squats but other than that it all felt good. 345x2 (band tension was 0lbs at the bottom but a shit ton at the top😤). Then 405x5 for sumo deadlifts, 225x10 on reverse band box front squats, and 315x10 for snatch grip rack pull shrugs. •

Variation Variation Variation! Don’t get caught up doing the same main movements and same accessories for months on end.

Training with a variety of movements is one of the best ways to stay clear of overuse injuries in the long run, and build up weaknesses if you program the right movements! My suggestion would be to use a main movement for a few weeks and cycle through a handful of movements that you know will drive up your big 3 lifts (bench squat or deadlift). For accessories, always try and switch things up... whether it be tempo, exercise, reps, angles, etc. Here’s some videos of ratcheted speed bench @ 185, shoulder saver bench @ 225, and some banded tricep work which I really loved...first time I’ve tried it with two bands instead of just one and it felt great👌 •

Beginner workout plan inspired by #wenningstrength #wenningwarmups

Getting back into lifting and started doing the Wenning warm up before I lift and I realized it is a great workout for the untrained or someone who is just getting back in to lifting. This is a full body approach with two different workouts per week. Aim for 4 days per week. Exercises inside the brackets should be done circuit style with no rest until all 4 sets are done. After upper is done take a five minute breather while you set up for lower. This workout should take no longer than 40 minutes. Check out Wenning Strength on YouTube for a more in depth video.

Sumo deadlift @ 275 for 8s (form sucks I know lol), after a well below average squat session.

New goal for this summer is to really build up my sumo and learn how to sumo much more efficiently. Awesome lift today. 495 for 2 reps off 3 inch blocks(1st vid), 275/295/315 for 12inch box squat triples (2nd 3rd and 4th vids), front squats (not shown) and then 405x10 on rack pulls (last vid).

After all that we had quad, hamstring, adductor, abductor and core accessories. Lock outs for dead’s and being comfortable in the hole for squats are my main focuses still. ALSO, weighing 189ish lately. Big things coming this summer💪 •

Saturday’s are my athletic day for this summers program👌 I’m trying to become not only bigger and stronger but also continue to be agile, athletic and most importantly healthy! I want to be able to powerlift and keep hitting PRs and huge lifts for a long... keeping my body healthy, balanced, and mobile is key👌 This summer I’m focusing a ton on GPP (General Physical Preparedness, @realmattwenning ) and keeping my back and core healthy and strong. If you want to get stronger you need to pick out your weaknesses! I see people failing at the top of their bench and then doing TONS of flys and other presses but no close grip work, little to no tricep work and they still wonder why they can’t bench anymore than they did a month ago. Be smart about you’re training...know what you need to work on and then DO THE WORK. Personally my biggest weakness has been locking out deadlifts, but with tons of hip and glute work, lots of block pulls, hip thrusters and slow wide box squats, this weakness is now slowly but surely turning into a strength!💪 have a good weekend y’all

So I did pretty good today at the Utah State Championships.

Got red lighted a couple times for not waiting for commands, but I hit my lifts when it counted and set 1 State record, 4 personal records including 424lb deadlift and 1,013 total. Oh, I also won my division for the gold...and New Utah State Champion....me. Lol.

Main:
8x3 Speed Bench with 125 (40% 1RM) straight weight and another 100+ in band and chain. 4th and 8th sets shown.

In the picture you can see a great band setup that makes you keep your back tight. In order to keep the bar in its correct path, you have to really keep your back tight due to the lateral tension from the bands. Dont use too much band tension, as you can see I only used a micro band, and dont use too much bar weight. The weight I had on the bar actually isnt ideal, but I warmed up to that weight and had the lateral band in place the whole time.

I have been AWOL for the last couple of weeks. I've been choosing sleep over gym.

That changed this week though. Monday was CAT bench day. Yesterday was CAT squats. Today is CAT deads. I've added something new this week too, @realmattwenning style warm-ups. I think that on Monday I pushed too hard on them and it detracted from my bench session. However, I got it just right last night. 4 sets of 25 for the following exercises:

. Calf Raises (I did these as working sets of 4x10)
. Lying Leg Curls
. Adductor Machine
. Lunges
. Standing Behind the Neck Barbell Press

I added the last exercise to get some good blood flow into my shoulders, upper back, and especially my triceps which were hella sore and stiff from Monday. I think that the warm-ups helped. I'm no where near as sore today as I was a couple of weeks ago when I did my first squat day. Plus, I was still able to keep my bar speed going. At least it felt that way, I didn't take any vids last night.

This was me circa 2015. During my CrossFit days, still relying on Olympic shoes, and a 405lb lifetime PR on my squat.

As I would drift away from CF and started to study powerlifting & Strongman on my own, I hit 410 maybe 1.5 years later. But that was it. I thought that would be the last time I'd ever visit the 400 club.

Enter Matt Wenning. @stealthmode81 and I dropped in on @ludus_magnus_gym last November for an evaluation, and Matt, Teddy & @brookesousa created a 10-week plan for us to follow.

Today was the start of week 10. And the 2nd week in a row I hit 400lb for a double. Proof is in the pudding!
